What is synchronised skating?

Synchronised skating is an ice-skating sport where between 8 to 16 skaters perform together as a team. They move as a flowing unit at high speed over the ice, while performing elements and footwork.   There are many different levels from Juveniles to Adults.     Canterbury Masters Figure Skating Club have adult teams that compete in Adult Synchro Skills and Adult Synchronised Competition grades.   In this grade they are required to skate a Free skate program that includes elements such as circles, lines, blocks, wheels, intersections, creative,  and no hold elements.  Each element is judged awarding a GOE (Grade of Execution) which gives the Technical Score.  As well they are judged for their Skating Skills, Composition and Performance, (Component Score).   These marks are then added to give their combined total score for the performance.

For many years "Spectrum" synchronised ice skating team has been the flagship of the Club, competing from 2006 - 2018 in club, regional, and national championships as well as various NZ Masters Games and also Australian Figure Skating Championship events.

The Club has also had other teams competing during this period, usually formed from Coffee Club skaters.   These teams are Classic Dreamers, Frappe, Splice on Ice and Street Kids.

Since 2019 there has been a resurgence of skaters wanting to participate in  synchronised skating again and the Canterbury Masters Figure Skating Club has supported this move.   In 2020 and 2021 a synchro skills team named "Survivors" evolved and they performed in the Club Gala (due to Covid no championship could be held in those two years).   In 2022 they competed in the Adult synchronised event at the CMFSC Club championships under the banner of "The Team with No Name"

Update to July 2023 and a new name emerged for the current synchronised Team.  Team Illusion.   So the name  "Spectrum" has finally been retired to the annals of history.

The history of "Spectrum" is now covered via this website.   Also images of all the previous teams.
